17.01.2018 - The “Unternehmen Berufsanerkennung” (helping companies to recognise foreign professional qualifications) project shows why it is worthwhile for companies to foster the recognition of foreign professional qualifications.
“The applicant completed his/her professional training abroad. We just couldn’t assess if he/she had the necessary professional qualifications.” Many HR managers find themselves in this situation when they receive application documents from skilled experts who have obtained their professional qualifications outside Germany. And this is precisely where the above project comes in, because it helps to determine whether and to what extent the foreign qualifications are equivalent to the corresponding qualifications in Germany and where gaps may still exist.
But the procedure to be applied here can be helpful in many more ways. Recognising foreign professional qualifications can also serve as a tool to attract and retain skilled workers. How can this be done? The “Unternehmen Berufsanerkennung” project includes a number of different activities and events to provide information about how this can be achieved.
For example, a social media seriesshows examples of companies which have been able to retain employees long term, or which have identified the hidden potential of skilled labour. The project also includes a road showwhich informs visitors in an interactive and entertaining way about how to use the recognition of foreign professional qualifications as an HR instrument, and it provides specific advice and assistance.
In addition, by the end of 2018, the project aims to inform around 20,000 companies by phone about the possibilities and options for recognising foreign professional qualifications. And after the success of the company award “Wir für Anerkennung” (We are in favour of recognition), companies and organisations will again be honoured for their efforts in the area of the recognition of foreign professional qualifications next year.
The "Unternehmen Berufsanerkennung" project was launched in January 2016 at the initiative of the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (Deutscher Industrie- und Handelskammertag e. V.) and the German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (Zentralverband des Deutschen Handwerks e. V.). It is being implemented by DIHK Service GmbH and the Central Agency for Continuing Vocational Education and Training in the Skilled Crafts (ZWH) in association with 11 Chambers of Industry and Commerce and five chambers of skilled crafts. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
