Studying in Germany:
Requirements, Visas and Prospects

Applying to a higher education institution, entering Germany, and career prospects after graduation: here you will find all the key information for international students in Germany.

What you need to know

  • Low fees: at most public universities, you only pay a low semester fee.
  • Admission and qualifications: to apply, you generally need a recognised school-leaving certificate (higher education entrance qualification) and suitable German or English language skills.
  • Visa and proof of funding: students from third countries apply for a student visa and usually prove their living costs through a blocked account. Nationals of EU or EFTA states do not need a visa.
  • Earning money and prospects to stay: you are allowed to work alongside your studies, and after graduating, you have up to 18 months to look for a job in Germany.
