The energy transition, which aims to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045, is a catalyst for new jobs – hundreds of thousands of people are already employed in this sector in Germany, particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises. Germany’s leading sector – the automotive industry – is also becoming greener: the Federal Government is promoting innovative approaches to the further development of e-mobility and the continued expansion of charging points.
What is more, green technologies from Germany are in great demand worldwide, especially in the area of renewables. The environmental engineering sector in Germany is creating new innovation not only in the energy sector, but also in the development of new information and communication technologies. Renewables are already an important source of electricity in Germany today. In 2021, more than 57% of the electricity in Germany was already generated from wind, sun, water or biomass.

Green jobs can be found in all sectors of the economy, ranging from traditional fields such as manufacturing, transport and construction, to emerging occupational fields, for example in the energy sector. To put it in a nutshell, green jobs are the basis for a successful energy transition.
People who have a qualification in engineering or technical professions as well as those with a link to the manufacturing and construction industry are particularly in demand in the green economy. These professions include the following:
- Craftspeople (e.g. electronic technicians for energy and building technology, heating engineering, mechatronics, system mechanics and sanitary, heating and air-conditioning technology)
- Engineers (e.g. energy consultants, environmental engineers, design engineers/developers, automotive engineers, automation engineering)
- IT specialists (e.g. software developers, data scientists)
These professions are part of the following economic sectors:
- Energy and electrical engineering (e.g. wind power, photovoltaics, solar power technology/installation)
- Mechanical engineering
- Technical equipment and installations
- Construction industry
- Automotive industry (e.g. electric mobility)
- Agriculture and farming
- Horticulture

Working in green jobs: Do you need a visa?
As a citizen of the European Union, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland, you do not need a visa or residence permit to work in Germany.
