Ask Me Anything - EU Blue Card
Hello, I am Tyler. I am a project manager at a start-up in Berlin. I have been living here since May 2019. I am here to answer a few questions.
Why did you choose Germany as the place to work?
I wanted to work for my company. They are the perfect team, solving the big problems in artificial intelligence. I made a list of 500 companies from all over the world that interested me. The company in Berlin was number one.
How did you find a job in Germany?
I got to know the CEO on Twitter. We had seven interviews via Zoom. The result was a job here in Germany with this company.
Do you need to speak good German for the job interview?
No, I had the interview in English, and we work in English. We are very multicultural and come from 20 or 30 different countries.
In your opinion, what do employers in Germany value most?
I cannot speak for all companies, only for mine. What matters are values such as honesty, respect, and taking on challenges.
How did your family react?
They reacted with joy and said, "You have to go." I am 22 years old and I do not have any responsibilities. "You have to go to Germany!" I love my family.
How did you apply for your EU Blue Card from the USA?
I went to the General Consulate of Chicago and received a visa there that was valid for six months. After this time, I had to apply for an EU Blue Card. For this, I needed my university degree certificate and my German employment contract.
How did you prepare for Germany?
I did not have any friends here in Berlin or in Germany. I had to ask acquaintances for tips. Everyone was very kind and helped me. It was difficult at the beginning, but then it became easy. I never go hungry here in Germany, I have a great flat, and I have a good job.
What do you like most about Germany?
I love Berlin. I love the people here.
