University entrance qualification

German: Hochschulzugangsberechtigung

The university entrance qualification is a collective term for educational qualifications that entitle the holder to study at a German university. As a rule, this is the general qualification for university entrance ("Abitur"), which is obtained by successfully completing grammar school ("Gymnasium") in Germany. For international applicants, university entrance qualifications may consist of a combination of school-leaving certificates, university entrance examinations and/or periods of study, depending on their country of origin. There are general university entrance qualifications (for all courses of study) and subject-specific university entrance qualifications (only for certain fields of study). In some cases, attendance at a preparatory college is required before starting a course of study.
