An academic degree is an academic qualification awarded after successful completion of studies at a university by means of an examination. In Germany, these include bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, the “Diplom”, the “Magister”, state examinations and doctorate or PhD degrees. The type of degree depends on the subject and the university. Academic degrees are a prerequisite for certain professions and further academic qualifications.
