The Oder River is a shared resource between Germany and Poland that supports aquatic life and biodiversity while providing many ecosystem services. Sustainable transboundary management of the Oder River faces many challenges, however, as evidenced by the mass die off of hundreds of tons of fish, mussels, and other sensitive species in the river in 2022. The challenge of restoring and sustainably managing the river requires a transboundary effort to develop solutions and platforms for exchange. The OderTogether project aims to compile information and develop solutions for transboundary water quality, fish biodiversity, fisheries, and ecosystem services management together with scientists, managers, and stakeholders from both Brandenburg and Poland. The project is funded under the Interreg VI A Brandenburg-Poland program and includes four additional partners in Brandenburg and Poland.

We are seeking a scientist with cross-cultural human dimensions expertise related to natural resources, fisheries, and ecosystem services. The scientist will be responsible for a work package focused on eliciting and comparing ecosystem services and their importance for regional residents on both sides of the Oder River. In addition, this position will help develop short questionnaires to elicit angler values during creel surveys while also supporting other work packages with human dimensions aspects.

Tasks:

  • Planning, organizing, and conducting questionnaires regarding the importance of ecosystem services for regional residents
  • Eliciting and mapping the roles and key objectives of stakeholders
  • Planning and conducting interactive, transboundary workshops and meetings with scientists and important stakeholders
  • Developing short questionnaires for creel surveys to help describe angler types and preferences
  • Statistical analysis of human dimensions data
  • Engaging and supervising third-party contractors for surveys and translations
  • Presentation of results to project team scientists and stakeholders
  • Publication of results in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • ·         Traveling on multi-day business trips alone and with other scientists   Minimum Qualifications
