International and Specialized Services (ZAV) initiates new project for the recruitment of doctors from Mexico

17 April 2018 - International and Specialized Services (ZAV) helps German employers find skilled professionals for vacancies that are difficult to fill by looking for the right candidates abroad. ZAV is currently focusing on recruiting engineers, IT staff, doctors and nursing and social care professionals, professional drivers and skilled professionals to work in construction, hotels and restaurants. It not only recruits professionals from within Europe – where there is close cooperation within the EURES network – but has expanded its focus to a number of non-EU countries.

Since last year, for example, ZAV has been looking to recruit skilled professionals from Mexico. A pilot project has been launched, in which ten doctors are currently taking German classes, preparing them for employment in a German hospital later on. In total, 30 Mexican doctors are to be employed at German hospitals across Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The project is being conducted in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Länder-based networks that are part of the Integration through Qualification (IQ) funding programme and with the assistance of the German Embassy in Mexico

“Even before the start of the project, we have hosted a number of bilateral events, building up good contacts with the Mexican labour authorities”, Alexander Wilhelm, managing director of the international services division of ZAV, said. “The Mexican labour authorities told us that they would be interested in taking part in such a project. A key focus for us as we look for skilled healthcare professionals is to make sure that we do not recruit doctors or nursing and social care professionals from countries that have a skills shortage in these sectors. Mexico has a high standard of training and we believe that this will make it easier for Mexican professionals to have their qualifications recognised in Germany.”

We will soon start selecting additional candidates for the pilot project, whilst at the same time launching talks with hospitals and clinics that might be interested in recruiting them. Any interested employers are welcome to contact ZAV or the recruiting services at their local Federal Employment Agency office.
