The Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (SGN) was founded in 1817 and represents one of the most relevant institutions investigating nature and its diversity. Currently, over 300 scientists from more than 40 countries across 11 locations in Germany conduct research in the fields of biodiversity, earth system analysis and climate change. At our location in Görlitz (Saxony), the research focus of the museum lies on soil zoology.

The Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung with its head institute in Frankfurt (Main) is looking for the following person for the Senckenberg Museum for Natural History Görlitz, to start as soon as possible, preferably by the 1st of August 2024:

Postdoc Research Scientist (m/f/d) Soil macroecology, Soil BON Foodweb and #GlobalCollembola

(full-time / part-time option available)

In this PostDoc position, you will be committed to the research of synthesis in soil macroecology that focuses on describing global soil biodiversity gradients and their connections with soil functioning. The position is linked to the coordination of the global research network ‘Soil BON Foodweb Team’ and can be linked to #GlobalCollembola. The work is done in collaboration with the core Soil BON group at iDiv in Leipzig and Coimbra, Portugal (Prof. Nico Eisenhauer and Prof. Carlos Guerra) and with researchers leading other soil macroecology initiatives (nematodes, earthworms, oribatid mites, macrofauna).

Your tasks:

- You will conduct data syntheses and analyses on soil animal macroecology
- Organisation of workshops, online and conference-based international meetings
- Coordinating large international teams of volunteer scientists and global soil biodiversity sampling campaigns in the framework of Soil BON
- Leading synthesis papers on soil animal macroecology
- Establishing procedures of sustainable data management in soil macroecology in the framework of the data warehouse „Edaphobase“
- Co-writing research proposals supporting Soil BON
- Supervising students and assistants

Your profile

- You have a PhD degree in ecology, biology or a related field
- Scientific background in soil ecology
- Experience in leading research tasks with multiple (10+) people involved, including writing and leading multi-authored papers
- Experience in assembling and handling large datasets
- Profound experience of statistical modelling in R
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken
- Team spirit and cooperative work style

Advantageous

- Experience in coordination of research projects
- Knowledge of how to do meta-analyses and writing syntheses papers
- Expertise in ecology of soil invertebrates
- Experience in writing scientific proposals
