A university is a type of higher education institution which serves scientific research and teaching across a broad range of subjects and has the right to award doctorate degrees. It traditionally places a stronger focus on theoretical basic research than other types of higher education institutions.
In common parlance – including many information portals – the term "university" is often used as a synonym for "higher education institution", although strictly speaking, univeristies are only a subcategory.
