GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world’s largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensure each day to conduct world-class science.
The GSI atomic-physics group invites applications for the position of a

Research Associate (Postdoc) (all genders) in Experimental Physics
Posting-ID: 22.03-1400

within the framework of the Hessian Research Cluster ELEMENTS. The position can be filled as early as possible.

The Cluster Project ELEMENTS is a collaborative project of Goethe University Frankfurt, TU Darmstadt, JLU Gießen, and the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy-Ion Research. It addresses the properties of physics of binary neutron-star mergers from the interpretation of gravitational-wave and electromagnetic signatures to the transport of radiation in ultra-strong magnetic and electric fields. The worldwide unique combination of storage and trapping facilities at GSI enables studies of properties of ions in basically any atomic charge state interacting with electrons, atoms and photons. To constrain atomic-physics theory employed for calculating radiation transport, key data on the structure of low- and medium-charged heavy ions are indispensable.

The successful candidate:

- is expected to achieve the necessary infrastructure at the low-energy storage ring CRYRING to enable storage of low- and medium-charged ionsand,
- will be in a close collaboration with atomic physics and astrophysics theory groups, to design and conduct the corresponding experiments.

Your Qualification:
- a successfully completed scientific study of physics, posseses master and doctoral degrees in field of experimental physics,
- profound experience in working with storage and/or trapping facilities is necessary, which includes expert knowledge of vacuum technologies, equipment in UHV, ion sources and targets, various ion manipulation techniques, detector and data acquision hardware, data analysis, etc.,
- international research experience,
- a high publication track record at her/his stage of career,
- the ability to propose and defend scientific proposals,
- willingness and experience in executing research projects within large collaborations is expected.
We offer an innovative, interdisciplinary and excellently equipped research group that is world leading in several fields of research. The position is initially limited for two years.
The salary is based on the German civil service employees (Tarifvertrag für den öffen-tlichen Dienst - TVöD (Bund)).
